THE CONTRACEPTIVE PATCH THAT CAN PREVENT PREGNANCY FOR 24 WEEKS.

Professor Mark Prausnitz of the Institute of Technology, Georgia and his team supported by Family Health are working on a contraceptive patch that could prevent pregnancy for up to 24 weeks.

The patch will only need to be applied to skin for few seconds, during which micro needles would be implant under the woman's skin and release contraceptive into the body.

This method being easy would negate the need to take a one-per-day contraceptive pill and also will possibly prove more suitable than coil or implant which can only be administered by a doctor.

With this method women to be able to self-administer long-acting contraceptives with the microneedle patch that would be applied to the skin for five seconds just once a month.

Because of the well established homones being used, the patch is expected to be an effective contraceptive. Expected skin irritation at the site of the patch will be minimal.

A contraceptive patch lasting more than one month is perfect, particularly in countries where women have little access to healthcare.

Despite the fact that no cost has yet been set - it is thought that the product will be affordable to be used in the developing countries.

This technology is not only useful for contraceptive purposes. It also has significance as a safe and easy way for vaccinations to be performed.

The device would be safer for the body as the micro-needles would be completely pain-free, as well as being made from the same material used to make dissolvable stitches.
